Features and Benefits

In this section, we break down each feature and explain what it is, how it is beneficial, and who should have it.

Hosting

Bandwidth

  • Free: 1 GB per month.
  • Mini: 1 GB per month.
  • Basic: 10 GB per month.
  • Pro: 100 GB per month.

How to choose bandwidth

Choosing bandwidth for your Framer site might seem difficult, but it is simple.

We need to estimate three values: average page size, daily visitors, and page views per visitor.

Then we multiply it like this: page size x daily visitors x page views per visitor.

Let’s say that we have a site that has:

  • Page size: 0.5 MB
  • Daily visitors: 100
  • Page views per visitor: 2

Estimated bandwidth: 0.5 MB x 100 daily visitors x 2 page views per visitor = 100 MB (0.1 GB).

With this example, I would go for the Basic plan since those 100 MB are per day. Multiply it by roughly 30 days; we have around 3000 MB (3 GB).

It is also advised that we calculate 50% more usage than we expect to be secured for spikes in traffic.

Visitors

  • Free: 1k Visitors per month.
  • Mini: 1k Visitors per month.
  • Basic: 10k Visitors per month.
  • Pro: 200k Visitors per month.

Max upload size

  • Free: 5 MB per file.
  • Mini: 5 MB per file.
  • Basic: 5 MB per file.
  • Pro: 20 MB per file.

Max upload size is the maximum size of a file, image, and video uploaded. For most web owners, 5 MB is sufficient when one optimizes files.

Images are the easiest to optimize, and choosing the right format (.webp, .jpg, .avif) will reduce file size drastically.

Videos are large, even for videos of a few minutes. Videos should be embedded in services like YouTube and Vimeo.

SSL certificate

All plans have an SSL certificate enabled.

An SSL certificate is a digital certificate that provides an encrypted connection between the user’s browser and the website server. Most browsers will mark the website as safe when an SSL certificate is present, which is good for SEO and user experience.

CDN

The Free and Mini plans don’t have a CDN available.

  • Basic: Basic CDN.
  • Pro: Global CDN.
  • Enterprise: Premium CDN.

A CDN helps serve files (HTML, CSS, images) faster by having a server near the visitor’s location.

If a UK visitor visits a website with a server in the US, a CDN with a branch in the UK will serve the content to the user much faster than “traveling” to the US since it only has to go to the CDN’s location in the UK.

Custom Proxy setup

Only the Enterprise plan supports this.

99.99% uptime SLA

Only the Enterprise plan supports this.

Publishing

Web pages

All plans let us publish all types of web pages.

Instant publish

All plans support instant publishing.

With Framer, all plans support instant publishing, which means that changes added to the website can be published with the ease of a click.

Image optimization

All plans have image optimization.

All plans include image optimization. Framer automatically scales and formats uploaded images.

Every image uploaded is downscaled to 512, 1024, 2048, and 4096 pixels, and Framer automatically picks the resolution for the device the image is shown on.

Images are never upscaled to ensure the quality of the uploaded image. If you have a 1500 pixels wide image, Framer will never upscale that image. This image will be 1500 px wide in both “Large” and “Full” options.

Uploaded images will also be formatted to .webp, a lightweight image format.

Publish to framer.app

All plans can be published to the framer.app domain.

By default, all published websites are hosted on “framer.app” subdomain, and this domain can’t be customized.

You can add a custom domain on “framer.website”, but the name must be unique and not created. This is also free, and let us add a prettier domain name.

Publish to a custom domain

All plans except the free plan can be published to a custom domain.

You must have a paid plan to publish your Framer website to a custom domain.

A custom domain means that you have a bought domain from a third party that you own.

Learn how to add a custom domain to Framer here.

No banner

All plans except the free plan have no banner.

With the Free plan, you are obliged to have a “Made in Framer” banner on your website that is automatically added. It is removed when choosing any paid plan.

Editor

Design canvas

All plans have the design canvas.

Prototyping

All plans allow prototyping.

Code Editor

All plans have an integrated code editor.

Custom fonts

All plans allow custom fonts.

Features

CMS items

  • Free: 100 items.
  • Mini: 100 items.
  • Basic: 1.000 items.
  • Pro: 10.000 items.
  • Enterprise: Custom Limits.

The CMS items are posts, or rows, in the CMS. If you have less than 100 blog posts on Framer, you can have either the Free or the Mini plan.

If your website has more than 100 posts, upgrading to a bigger plan is necessary.

CMS items aren’t just blog posts. Any item in Framers CMS is considered an item.

If you have multiple CMS collections, all items count towards CMS items.

CMS collections

  • Free: 1 CMS Collection.
  • Mini: 1 CMS Collection.
  • Basic: 1 CMS Collection.
  • Pro: 10 CMS Collections.
  • Enterprise: Custom Limits.

A CMS collection is the number of CMS types in Framer. If you have a blog and an e-commerce store on your Framer site, they count as two CMS collections.

This isn’t a problem if you only have a blog or e-commerce store since you only have one CMS collection.

Search page limit

The Free plan doesn’t support page search.

  • Mini: 1 search page limit.
  • Basic: 10 search page limit.
  • Pro: 300 search page limit.
  • Enterprise: Unlimited.

Custom code

All plans except the free plan support custom code.

Password protection

Only Basic, Pro, and Enterprise supports password-protected pages.

Add-Ons

Only Pro and Enterprise support add-ons.

Analytics

Only Pro and Enterprise support analytics.

Staging

Only Pro and Enterprise support staging.

Redirects

Only Pro and Enterprise support redirects.

Cookie banner

Only Pro and Enterprise support cookie banners.

The cookie banner component shows a cookie permission message on the website using Google Tag Manager. It works with Google’s Consent Mode, letting you turn on Google features, other add-ons, or special codes only after getting the okay from your visitors. You can change how it looks and what it says to match your website.

Verdict on the Framer pricing structure

Framer sure has a lot of features, and it is easy to start with, even for beginners in the website space.

For most website owners, a Mini plan is adequate for most websites. A simple blog or a small e-commerce store fits perfectly into this plan.

More experienced users and established websites wanting to migrate to Framer should go for the Pro or Enterprise plans since they have the most features.

But we have to talk about some features that should be in all plans and not only Pro or Enterprise (maybe except for the Free plan – Framer has to make money, I get that).

One of those features is the Cookie banner component, which is only available for the Pro plan. Since the EU law requires a Cookie consent banner on websites, some small website owners might use alternative no-code builders for this important feature.

Another feature that should be available for all plans is the redirect function. There is no denying that a redirect option should be available on most plans since it can be a deal-breaker for those wanting to migrate to Framer and have another website on a different platform today.

That being said, Framer might be one of the cheaper alternatives in the no-code space, and that does not affect the quality. It is a fully functional no-code website builder.

Framer isn’t only for small portfolio sites and demo projects; large players use Framer for their landing pages. See what enterprise customers can do with the no-code tool.

If you also have some experience with Figma, you will be able to learn Framer quickly.

Before jumping on a paying plan, I recommend trying the Free plan to see if it fits your needs. You can at least test the waters thoroughly before making up your mind.

Alternative for complex web apps

Framer probably won’t cut it if you’re creating a more complex web app or SaaS with much logic. An alternative where you can create complex workflows and logic without coding is the no-code web app builder Bubble.io.

Bubble.io is a no-code alternative to Framer but more logic-driven. Framer is great at design elements but doesn’t have as many complex features as Bubble.io.
